Look for a rescue that matches dogs to your household's actual routine and explains their needs. Use the GOV.UK buying and rehoming guide ↗ when checking the organisation and animal's origin. Each rescue sets its own criteria; there is no general entitlement to take a particular dog.

Describe your home honestly

Explain children, other animals, time away, exercise, experience and any planned move. Establish whether your housing permits a pet. Prepare confirmation in advance if the organisation requires it.

For example, Battersea uses online registration, matching to circumstances and a discussion with its team. Registration expresses interest in rehoming rather than guaranteeing a particular dog. Battersea: how to rehome a dog ↗.

Discuss a suitable individual

Ask about observed behaviour, time alone, transport, walks and compatibility. Explore uncertainties: rescues do not always know a complete history. Arrange meetings and household involvement under the organisation's procedures.

Request the clinical summary, vaccination status, microchip information, current medication and expected treatment. A promise that a dog is “fully healthy” should not substitute for specific records.

Budget for the first month and beyond

Ask for the adoption fee and inclusions. Microchipping, vaccination, neutering, introductory insurance and support vary by organisation. Budget separately for equipment, a safe resting area, food, a veterinary appointment and possible behaviour support. Discuss insurance for already-known conditions with the insurer. RCVS: veterinary fees ↗.

Do not transfer money to an unchecked private intermediary claiming to be a rescue. For a dog imported for transfer to you, ask the organisation to establish compliance with the applicable import and rehoming rules.

Prepare a calm start

Agree the food, initial walks and support contact before collection. Update the registered keeper information as instructed. Dogs throughout the UK must be microchipped and registered by eight weeks. GOV.UK: microchipping ↗.

Obtain the written agreement and procedure if difficulties emerge at home. Seek support promptly rather than passing a rescue dog to someone else contrary to the agreement.
