Check each border separately

A land route through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus or Russia requires checks for every country, direction and crossing. A bus ticket is not entry permission. A Schengen visa does not remove nationality-specific national restrictions.

As checked on 7 October 2026, FCDO advises against all travel to Russia ↗ and Belarus ↗. Consider this before purchase and when checking insurance. Older advice about travelling through Finland is outdated: the Finnish Government ↗ confirmed continued closure of its eastern land border until further notice.

Find the crossing’s operating rules

Use Estonia’s Police and Border Guard Board ↗, Latvia’s State Border Guard ↗ and Lithuania’s VSAT ↗. Check the actual crossing’s hours, passenger and vehicle restrictions, pedestrian access, queues and temporary changes.

An open crossing is not necessarily open around the clock or to every transport type. Check both sides. Ask the bus company about its own arrangements: carrying luggage across a pedestrian section may differ from travelling continuously on one coach.

Documents and visas

For every passenger, verify the passport, permissions, entry basis and return journey. If returning through Schengen, check that the document permits the required re-entry and remaining stay.

Treat Belarus–Russia travel as its own segment. Official Belarus entry guidance ↗ describes separate conditions and limited authorised crossings. Visa-free entry to one country should not be assumed to permit continuing into the other.

Bookings and contingency

Ask the operator to name the crossing and explain its plan if access closes. Compare cancellation, changes and responsibility for independent connections. Do not place a return flight immediately after predicted border clearance because queue duration is uncertain.

Prepare communication, water, essential items and funds for a lawful alternative. Check baggage, medication, cash and vehicle requirements separately. Recheck immediately before departure. If eligibility with your documents is unconfirmed, choose another option before making non-refundable payments.
