Match the bike to your journeys

Consider the route, storage, stairs and whether you need to carry the bike on transport. Short urban trips, mixed surfaces and compact home storage can call for different designs. TfL ↗ provides route and training information before you buy.

Try several sizes and request a test ride. Comfortable positioning, braking and control matter more than wheel size alone. Do not select a frame solely from a height chart without checking how it feels.

New or second-hand

For a new bike, ask about assembly, adjustment, warranty and the first service. For a used one, inspect the frame, brakes, wheels, gears and signs of damage. Arrange a mechanic’s inspection before final payment if you lack experience.

Request the frame number and evidence of ownership. BikeRegister BikeChecker ↗ can reveal known records, but no result is not proof that a bike is legitimate. Avoid erased frame numbers or a seller unwilling to explain its origin.

Electric bikes

Check GOV.UK EAPC rules ↗, including usable pedals, permitted motor power and assistance limits. Ordinary requirements include no more than 250 W continuous rated power and no motor assistance above 15.5 mph. A more powerful or modified machine may be a moped with different obligations.

Check the original charger, battery condition, servicing and warranty. Do not assume every online product is a lawful road-going bicycle. Non-standard throttle arrangements need separate checks.

Full budget and first rides

Include a good lock, lights, necessary accessories and maintenance. Establish secure storage at home and work. If insuring it, read lock and securing requirements. Keep receipts, the frame number and photographs.

Start with a quiet route and consider urban cycle training. Check brakes and wheels before riding. A successful purchase is manageable to use and store regularly, rather than simply the cheapest advertised model.
