What if an airline asks me to check my cabin bag?

Airlines set different cabin-baggage allowances. A small under-seat bag and an overhead suitcase may be separate products. The CAA recommends checking your airline's allowance ↗, including dimensions, weight and number of items. Save confirmation of any purchased baggage option and measure the fully packed bag as the airline instructs.
Another traveller's free suitcase is not reliable evidence: their fare, route or operating airline may differ. Resolve size questions before travel, when purchasing the appropriate option may still be straightforward.
Why a cabin bag is being checked
Ask whether the reason is an exceeded allowance or limited cabin space. Request the applicable condition and confirmation of any charge. If your bag meets the allowance, ask staff to record that checking it is an operational requirement. For a dispute, retain a photograph of the measurement and any receipt.
There is no universal cash payment merely because cabin baggage is placed in the hold. A later complaint needs to establish what you purchased, what happened and whether there were specific expenses or damage.
Remove essential items first
Prepare a separate small bag containing passports, money, your phone, essential medication, keys and valuables. Ask whether the checked bag will be returned beside the aircraft or on the baggage carousel, especially when connecting.
Under the CAA's battery guidance ↗, power banks and spare lithium batteries must travel in the cabin rather than checked luggage. Protect their terminals and check the airline's capacity and quantity limits. If your suitcase contains a built-in battery, tell staff and establish whether it must be removed.
Keep tags and evidence
Obtain a baggage tag and photograph the suitcase before handing it over. For a short connection, ask which destination appears on the tag and whether you need to collect the bag yourself. Do not leave this question until the aircraft door closes.
If the bag arrives damaged or does not arrive, report it to the baggage desk immediately, obtain a PIR and submit a separate written claim within the relevant deadline. If your dispute concerns a gate charge, send the airline evidence of the purchased allowance, dimensions and payment. A clear documented sequence is more useful than comparisons with other passengers' experiences.
