Comparing car insurance after moving to the UK

Motor insurance is compulsory for driving on British roads. The legal minimum, third party, covers liability for damage to others but not repairs to your own vehicle. GOV.UK explains the distinction ↗.
Also compare third party, fire and theft with comprehensive cover. Broader cover is not necessarily the most expensive. Comprehensive insurance does not automatically let you drive every other person's car: read any driving-other-cars extension and its restrictions separately. MoneyHelper ↗ explains the main cover types.
Prepare accurate information
Record the registration, overnight address, realistic annual mileage, intended use, main driver and additional drivers. Check whether commuting, business use and specific work journeys are included. Give licence type, dates and incident history in accordance with the insurer's questions.
For overseas driving experience or no-claims history, ask what evidence is accepted and whether a translation is required. This is insurer-specific: acceptance by one company does not guarantee acceptance by another. During identity checks, use the company's official channel and establish which documents are acceptable before sending sensitive information.
Compare equivalent quotes
For each quote, record the annual premium, compulsory and voluntary excess, instalment interest, cancellation fee and important exclusions. A higher voluntary excess can lower some quotes but leaves you paying more when claiming. Make sure it is affordable.
Check glass, courtesy car, breakdown and legal expenses separately. They may be optional or already included in another product. Protected no-claims discount does not mean your premium can never rise. Save the policy wording and insurance product information document rather than only the advertisement showing the price.
If a standard service declines you
Ask whether the difficulty concerns documents, licence, intended use or underwriting. Do not replace truthful information with invented answers to obtain a cheaper price. For unusual risks, consider the BIBA broker finder ↗, which GOV.UK links to.
Before driving, check the cover start date and time and the authorised drivers. An incident may need reporting to your insurer even without a claim; GOV.UK expressly states this in its accident guidance ↗. For a disputed payment, begin with the insurer's complaints process and retain the correspondence.
