A cat can fall from a familiar window or balcony. Cats Protection recommends securing access and warns that climbing ability does not prevent falls. Inspect the flat from the cat's perspective: furniture and shelves may provide a route to a window. Cats Protection: indoor cats ↗.

Decide which access can be made safe

Check opening sections, gaps, railings, nearby ledges and possible routes over the top. Until protection is installed, keep dangerous access closed and ventilate in a way that excludes the animal.

Supervision helps but does not replace a secure structure. If a balcony cannot be enclosed reliably and used safely, restrict access and provide an indoor viewing spot instead.

Choose protection for the actual structure

Look for a system designed to contain cats, with secure fixings and every escape route closed. An ordinary insect screen may be insufficiently strong. Cats Protection discusses sturdy cat-specific screens and wire mesh; netting should not create entanglement risks or unsafe gaps. Window and balcony recommendations ↗.

Ask an installer to explain window compatibility, strength, limitations and how people operate it. On balconies, consider the sides and top rather than only the railing frontage.

Agree installation and price

Obtain any necessary landlord or building-manager agreement before drilling. The written quotation should cover measuring, materials, installation, maintenance and making good after removal. A price per square metre is not necessarily the finished system's total cost.

Use an appropriate specialist for work at height. The system must not obstruct a designated escape route; discuss doubts with building management before installation.

Inspect protection after fitting

Check fixings and gaps, then inspect regularly for wear and damage. Agree window routines with everyone at home and your sitter. Provide indoor activities, hiding places and observation spots.

After a fall or injury, call a vet even if the cat walked away. Obtain instructions first and arrange safe transport. RCVS: emergency veterinary care ↗.
