Schengen documents for a child on a UK school trip

Ask for dates, every country and connection, transport, accommodation, accompanying staff and evidence of the educational purpose. Then check the rules for the child's nationality and passport. Being born or educated in the UK does not establish British citizenship, and a UK eVisa is not a Schengen visa.
Check school exemptions before paying for an ordinary tourist application. They depend on the destination and organisation of the trip; a classmate with a different passport travelling without a visa does not determine your child's position.
France has a specific school exemption
The France-Visas UK page ↗ allows qualifying non-EU pupils living in Britain to travel visa-free: the trip must be organised by their own general education school, including sixth form, with a teacher accompanying them. They need their own valid passport recognised by France and evidence of UK residence.
The school must provide the accompanying teacher with a pupil list containing the required information on headed paper, signed, dated and stamped by the head. This is not a general exemption for family holidays or every European itinerary. Check any other destination on the route separately.
Germany changed its rules in August 2026
The German Embassy explains the restored List of Travellers arrangements from 1 August 2026 ↗. Qualifying third-country school pupils with valid UK permission may travel in an organised group on a school-certified list, subject to the remaining conditions.
The school must use the official form. The detailed document instructions ↗ require a recognised valid travel document and a UK share code meeting the stated validity requirement. University trips are excluded. The exemption does not cover pupils who separate from the group for an extended period or arrive or return independently. Do not rely on instructions predating August 2026.
If an individual visa is required
Identify the competent consulate from the itinerary and educational purpose. Prepare the child's separate application, passport, birth and UK status documents, school letter, itinerary, payment and funding evidence, insurance and the destination's required consent documents.
For example, the Dutch checklist ↗ requires parental documents, signed consent and school confirmation where a minor travels without their parents. Sole custody, a deceased parent or a court order requires the corresponding evidence. Exemption from fingerprint collection does not automatically mean exemption from attending in person; check the age-specific conditions.
Costs and departure preparation
Check any educational-trip visa fee exemption, provider charges and passport delivery fees. Do not assume the entire process is free without establishing the category.
Agree with the school who will hold the passport, list, consents and eVisa evidence. Check return permission for the UK and carrier rules. Even under a school exemption, the documentation must reflect the group's actual journey.
