Identify the lamp type

LEDs, compact fluorescents and old incandescent bulbs need different disposal checks. Read markings or packaging without dismantling the casing. A glass exterior does not make a bulb ordinary bottle-bank material.

Recycle Now explains bulb routes ↗, including collection points for energy-efficient lamps and different treatment of old incandescent bulbs. Do not place every lamp in bottle-and-jar recycling without explicit local acceptance.

Find a suitable point

Use your postcode in the Recycling Locator ↗ and check the precise category. A centre or participating retailer may accept it. Battery collection does not automatically include lamps, and electrical points can have restrictions.

Check hours, booking, residency evidence and vehicle rules before travelling. For large refurbishment quantities, confirm household limits. Do not leave boxes outside a closed collection point.

Prepare safely

Switch off power and allow cooling before removal, following fixture instructions. Use stable access; difficult heights or damaged fittings need appropriate help. Avoid risking a fall to save a call-out.

Protect intact lamps from breakage during transport, ideally with their original packaging. For broken fluorescent lamps, follow the manufacturer's or council's type-specific official guidance rather than treating unknown debris as ordinary glass. Keep children and pets away from fragments.

Other specialist waste

Check batteries, paint, oils and appliances separately. GOV.UK describes lawful household disposal ↗, including private-collector requirements. A general waste company may not accept every hazardous category.

Keep spent intact lamps in a labelled, protected container away from children until disposal. Retain a replacement lamp's type and compatibility details to simplify future replacement and recycling.
