How to choose and use your first UK credit card

A credit card lets you spend borrowed money up to a limit. It is not additional income. Before applying, decide whether you want routine purchases repaid in full, a particular purchase spread over time or a transfer of existing debt. Suitable products and their costs differ.
Prepare a budget after rent, bills and existing commitments. If you need credit every month simply to afford food, first review the shortfall and free debt-help options. A new credit limit does not resolve an ongoing budget deficit.
Check eligibility before applying
Read the lender’s requirements concerning age, residence, income and UK address history. Prepare accurate addresses, employment details, income and regular expenses. Check your credit reports for errors.
MoneyHelper recommends ↗ starting with an eligibility checker instead of submitting several full applications. Check that the preliminary assessment uses a soft search. Even a high likelihood of acceptance is not the lender’s final decision. If declined, establish why before making another application.
Compare the full cost
Compare APR, annual fees, the length of any 0% offer, the subsequent rate, balance-transfer charges and foreign-transaction fees. An advertised representative APR does not mean everyone receives that rate. Assess your personal offer and agreement.
MoneyHelper’s credit-card guide ↗ highlights the costs of cash withdrawals and interest. Cashback is poor value if debt costs exceed it. Do not treat the highest available credit limit as a goal: calculate what you can actually repay.
Set up repayment immediately
On every statement, check the statement balance, minimum payment and due date. For ordinary purchases, repaying the full balance on time under the card’s terms normally avoids interest. Cash withdrawals and other special transactions can be treated differently.
Set a Direct Debit for the full balance if your budget supports it, and check the first payment manually because the arrangement may not yet be active. Paying the minimum does not make borrowing interest-free and can leave a balance outstanding for years. With a 0% purchase offer, plan to clear the debt before the promotional period ends.
If you expect to miss a payment, contact the provider early. Keep the agreement, tariff and statements. Never hand over your card or one-time security codes to someone promising to “improve your credit rating”.
