Food allergy and intolerance need different approaches. For recurring symptoms, start with your GP and reaction history rather than a panel promising hundreds of unsuitable foods. NHS guidance warns that some home intolerance tests are inaccurate and can cause harmful restrictions. NHS: food intolerance ↗.

Record the actual reaction

Note the food, quantity, delay, symptoms, duration, medicines and relevant activity. Retain ingredients and packaging where possible. Ask whether a food-and-symptom diary, allergy referral or dietitian assessment is appropriate.

Do not challenge yourself with a food after a serious previous reaction. Bloating alone cannot establish or exclude allergy or its mechanism.

Match testing to the clinical question

For suspected allergy, specialists may use targeted skin-prick or blood tests and sometimes supervised procedures. Results require interpretation alongside history; a positive result is not an independent diagnosis for every food. NHS: food allergy assessment ↗.

Suspected intolerance may involve supervised elimination and reintroduction or indicated breath testing. A clinician selects the method and timing. Large commercial panels are not universal substitutes.

Check private services

Before paying, ask what is measured, validation for your symptoms, who interprets results and what follow-up includes. Check the clinician's qualifications or HCPC dietitian registration and complete consultation, testing and review costs.

Question claims that one panel explains fatigue, weight, skin and every digestive symptom. Avoid excluding major food groups for yourself or a child without a nutritional plan because essential nutrients may be lost.

Obtain an action plan

For confirmed allergy, discuss avoidance, labels, school or work arrangements and emergency medicines. If prescribed an adrenaline device, obtain training and follow your action plan.

Sudden tongue or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, fainting or serious illness require 999. Do not wait for results or a private clinic reply. NHS: serious allergic reactions ↗. Arrange review for persistent less acute symptoms even if a purchased panel was normal.
