Check your basis and expiry dates

Under the Global Talent extension guidance ↗, your qualifying endorsement or eligible prize must not have been withdrawn. You must also demonstrate earnings in your expert field during your time in the UK. An in-country application should be submitted before your existing permission expires.

Locate your visa decision and endorsement, and check the eVisa and passport dates. Record each family member's immigration expiry separately. Extending the main applicant's permission does not automatically extend a partner's or child's status.

Demonstrate earnings connected to your field

The official evidence examples ↗ specify no minimum earnings threshold for this condition. Employees may use payslips, an employer letter, bank payments and a P60. Self-employed applicants may provide appropriate business accounts and a letter from a suitably qualified accountant. Separate examples explain evidence of research funding.

Your documents should establish both the earnings and their connection to the field for which you were endorsed. If a payment description does not explain that connection, add a contract or an appropriate institutional letter. Reconcile dates, amounts and payers' names. Do not present company turnover as personal earnings without explaining the payment structure.

Choose the period and budget

An extension can last up to five years at a time, with further extensions available while the requirements continue to be met. Before selecting a duration, check your settlement timetable: the main applicant may qualify after three or five years, depending on the basis. A shorter period reduces the IHS paid now but may require another paid application later.

At the time checked, the extension application fee is £766 per person. The IHS ↗ is normally £1,035 a year for an adult on this route and £776 for an applicant under 18. Use the application calculation for the exact duration, including partial years. Allow separately for translations and any optional services you select.

Submit the family applications separately

The dependant guidance ↗ requires separate applications and payment for partners and children. The main application's GWF or UAN number links the cases. Check relationship evidence, the child's residence and the rules for children who have turned 18.

An extension and ILR are different applications. A partner normally has their own five-year settlement requirement even if the main applicant qualifies sooner. Following an in-country application, do not travel outside the Common Travel Area before the decision, as the application may be treated as withdrawn. Keep payment receipts, an upload checklist and identity-verification confirmation. After approval, check the dates on every family member's eVisa.
