Choosing the right IELTS and preparing effectively

Obtain written requirements from the university, employer, professional regulator or immigration route. Check the version, overall score, component minimums and accepted format. IELTS distinguishes its test types ↗; Academic and General Training are not freely interchangeable.
For UK immigration, also check the official SELT requirements ↗. The correct test and approved centre matter. A course advertised as IELTS does not establish that the eventual exam meets your procedure’s conditions.
Diagnose before buying a package
Complete official tasks under time limits. Compare reading, listening, writing and speaking. Writing and speaking benefit from assessment against exam criteria, rather than only an automated grammar test.
Official IELTS resources ↗ include samples and preparation material. Record your baseline and specific difficulties: reading speed, task coverage, hearing endings or developing spoken answers. Plan around those weaknesses.
Choose a course or teacher
Ask about experience with your version, class size, marked writing assignments and individual speaking feedback. Clarify materials and mock-test inclusion. Useful preparation explains mistakes and gives you another attempt after correction.
Avoid guaranteed-score promises for a fixed number of weeks without assessment. If general English is still weak, some preparation must build language rather than only exam technique. Allow regular independent work between lessons.
Booking and time buffers
Budget separately for the exam, teaching, materials, travel, changes and possible retakes. Check admission identification and exact name spelling. Confirm result timing and the receiving organisation’s rules on One Skill Retake and online delivery.
Book with a margin before application deadlines. Use the final week to practise the familiar format and routine rather than relearning every topic. Keep the booking confirmation and recipient requirements. Aim for reliable performance across all four skills rather than memorising a few universal essays.
