Travel while an ILR application is being considered

An ILR application affects overseas travel

For an in-country settlement application, check the rules of your particular route carefully. The Skilled Worker ILR instructions ↗ expressly prohibit travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man before a decision. Leaving that area means the application is treated as withdrawn.

A valid passport, unexpired visa or returned identity document does not remove the restriction. A European trip is not made safe by a lack of passport control on one part of the journey. The rule concerns the pending application, rather than whether the Home Office retains your passport.

Compare your dates before paying

The standard Skilled Worker settlement timeframe is normally up to six months after biometrics, with complex cases potentially taking longer. Online payment, the biometrics appointment and the starting point of a particular service may be different dates. Long residence ↗ also has a travel restriction and its own processing provisions.

Before applying, mark essential overseas commitments, current visa expiry, ILR eligibility and likely biometrics availability. Do not postpone a necessary immigration application beyond valid permission merely to take a holiday. If an urgent family event arises, obtain advice about the consequences before buying a ticket or cancelling the application.

Faster decisions depend on the available service

Check the official faster-decision conditions ↗ and the options actually offered in your application. Routes and identity-verification methods do not all support identical services. Priority and super priority differ; their additional fees do not improve eligibility or guarantee approval.

Save the timeframe and starting point displayed when paying. Allow for weekends, bank holidays, evidence requests and possible delays. Avoid non-refundable travel based only on an intermediary's promise of a guaranteed decision tomorrow. Where family members apply together, timing can also depend on everyone completing their identity checks.

Prepare the status evidence after approval

Read the decision, open your eVisa ↗ and confirm that settlement is recorded. Make sure your current passport is linked to the UKVI account and the details match. Where possible, correct an inaccurate record through the official service before travelling.

The eVisa travel guidance ↗ explains carrier status checks using the linked document. Arrange access to your account and the prescribed travel share code where needed. A screenshot alone is not a universal substitute for electronic verification.

After ILR is granted, separate rules govern keeping it during prolonged absence. Do not confuse those rules with travel restrictions during an application or future citizenship absence limits. Retain the decision and travel dates for subsequent immigration applications.
