Choosing a short intensive English course in the UK

A short intensive can provide daily practice and focus on a particular skill. It does not guarantee several level changes within a week. Choose an outcome such as contributing to conversation, reviewing grammar or preparing for a specified test.
Confirm placement before paying. Complete-beginner groups may start only on certain dates. Weekly enrolment does not mean the syllabus restarts from zero every week.
Check the school
The British Council’s Accreditation UK directory ↗ lists accredited language centres and inspection reports. Verify the exact name and site. Accreditation is useful institutional evidence, but the particular course still needs assessment.
Compare general English, intensive or combined courses and individual tuition. Intensive does not describe a standard workload across schools. Establish lesson length in minutes, weekly teaching excluding breaks and maximum class size.
Learning and time outside class
Ask about assessment, placement, speaking tasks, independent work and feedback. For a short visit, travel matters: morning classes and distant accommodation may consume much of the day.
Check excursions and social programmes, their language and additional charges. Cultural activities are not a replacement for teaching hours. For an examination goal, establish availability and registration for the correct test version separately from tuition.
Budget the complete trip
Request tuition, registration, books, accommodation, meals, transport and transfer costs. For homestay, check area, room, bathroom, meals and host-change rules. Residence bookings need deposit and arrival-date information. Do not rely on tuition per week alone.
Read cancellation, illness, immigration-refusal, refund and transfer terms. Entry and study permission depend on your category; a school invitation is not permission by itself. Make non-refundable travel commitments after checking the applicable route and conditions. Keep the course confirmation and the school’s own contact information.
