Look for discover pole, introductory or absolute-beginners sessions. Pole fitness is not a level description by itself. London Dance Academy ↗ directs new students towards Discover Pole before Foundation, with higher-level progression agreed by the teacher. Other studios may use different systems.
Explain that this is your first lesson and ask whether it teaches grip and basic movement without expecting inversions. General gym experience does not replace pole technique.
Clothing and preparation
Ask for the equipment list for your particular class. Basic pole commonly uses skin contact for grip, but requirements differ from heels, exotic and aerial sessions. London Dance Academy publishes its own clothing guidance and advice against moisturiser before pole because it affects grip.
Do not buy expensive shoes for a standard introductory lesson unless the studio requires them. Remove jewellery as instructed, and check whether you need knee pads and whether changing facilities are available. Bring water and arrive for the warm-up.
Assess the studio
Ask how many students share each pole, how spotting is taught and what adaptations are possible. Explain relevant limitations or pregnancy before booking so the studio can discuss suitability and any further clearance it needs.
Request information about instructor qualifications, studio insurance and procedures if someone is injured. Check filming arrangements if you do not want to appear in promotional material. Clear feedback and gradual teaching matter more than promises of mastering advanced tricks quickly.
Costs and progression
Compare a single lesson, introductory course and package, including expiry dates, missed sessions and cancellation terms. Ask about registration fees and substitute teachers. Use the price attached to the current class rather than an old social-media post.
After the introductory session, assess the workload, explanations and journey. Discuss appropriate practice and the next level with your instructor before repeating new elements at home on unfamiliar equipment.
