What private medical insurance adds when you already use the NHS

If you are entitled to NHS care, buying insurance does not require leaving your GP or giving up NHS treatment. Base the decision on specific family needs rather than an assumption that everything becomes immediately available.
Define the services you want
List priorities: specialist consultations, diagnostics, surgery, physiotherapy or psychological care. Basic hospital cover may include inpatient and day-case treatment without all outpatient consultations and tests. Package names vary. MoneyHelper: private medical insurance ↗.
Request the benefits table, full policy terms and personalised exclusions. Check whether relevant London hospitals and consultants are included. Appointment availability also depends on the individual specialist.
Check limits before buying
Compare annual and individual limits, excesses, consultant fee limits, hospital networks and referral requirements. Routine pregnancy, cosmetic treatment, existing conditions and ongoing management of chronic illness are often excluded or subject to particular terms. One policy's rules do not establish another's.
For employer cover, obtain documents for your actual scheme, including dependant cover and what happens if employment ends. Group schemes may treat medical history differently.
Authorise each stage
Before booking privately, establish whether the insurer requires a GP referral, recognised consultant and authorisation number. Consultation, tests, scans and treatment may need separate approval. Obtain written confirmation of limits; an insurance card does not mean every invoice will be paid. Bupa: making a claim ↗.
Ask the clinic about charges above the insurer's allowance and expenses if a claim is declined. Share important results with your GP to coordinate parallel care.
Compare the total cost
Consider annual premiums, excesses, uncovered expenses and possible increases at renewal. For one investigation, self-pay quotations may be useful; insurance serves a different purpose for unforeseen treatment. Do not cancel existing cover until a replacement's terms are confirmed in writing: conditions arising meanwhile may become exclusions.
Emergency care follows its own route: 999 for danger to life and NHS 111 for urgent uncertainty. An insurance call centre does not replace medical assessment of dangerous symptoms.
