Assess whether the tooth can be retained

The dentist should establish the pain source, tooth condition and whether it can be restored after root-canal treatment. The NHS guide ↗ explains treatment of infection inside the tooth; the subsequent restoration matters too.

Swelling, fever or severe pain warrants urgent assessment. Do not wait weeks for a preferred specialist without an interim care plan.

When specialist input helps

Complex anatomy, retreatment or an uncertain prognosis may justify specialist assessment. Ask the general dentist to explain the referral and send imaging, previous treatment details and symptoms.

Check the GDC specialist lists ↗ for endodontics if the clinician uses a specialist title. Discuss microscope experience, but equipment alone does not establish specialist registration.

Agree the complete course

Ask about prognosis, alternatives, visit numbers, temporary sealing and the timing of a permanent filling or crown. Establish whether the endodontist or your regular dentist completes the restoration.

For NHS care, discuss referral access and charges. A private option should not be presented as the only route without explaining the circumstances. A private estimate should cover assessment, additional necessary imaging, treatment and review, with final restoration clearly identified separately.

After treatment

Obtain written instructions and a route for worsening symptoms. Lack of pain does not mean a temporary filling can remain indefinitely.

Ask when the result needs checking and what should prompt another visit. Keep images and reports, especially when moving. If extraction is proposed after unsuccessful treatment, request the reason and whether an independent opinion is appropriate before an irreversible decision.
