Sending money or topping up a Ukrainian mobile from the UK

A bank transfer and a mobile top-up are different transactions. A telephone account balance is not the same as freely available money in a bank account. First establish whether the recipient needs hryvnia, foreign currency in an account or payment for a mobile tariff.
For a bank transfer, obtain current details from the recipient's banking app: full name, IBAN, currency and any required bank information. A card number does not replace an IBAN with every service. Clarify the purpose and recipient type: personal and commercial payments may be supported differently.
Check availability and the final amount
Compare a bank with a regulated payment provider. The FCA explains how to check firms and money protection ↗. Compare the amount arriving after all charges and exchange-rate effects, delivery time, limits and cancellation terms.
For example, Wise's current UAH guidance ↗ provides for Ukrainian IBAN transfers and restrictions relating to account types, banks and regions. A previously successful card transfer does not establish that the method remains available. Check the particular transaction's terms before paying; this is a service example, not a recommendation to use it.
For a substantial payment, speak to the sending and receiving organisations first. Prepare evidence of the money's origin and purpose. An app's transaction limit and any tax consequences are different questions.
Use an official mobile top-up channel
Check the network, complete +380 number, amount and intended account. Kyivstar offers its website and My Kyivstar app ↗; check acceptance of the particular UK card and currency conversion during payment.
Do not rely on old USSD instructions: Kyivstar discontinued top-ups through *134# and the 899 voice menu from 1 July 2026 ↗. Other networks have their own methods. Keep the receipt and ask the recipient to check both the balance and tariff activation, because they do not always occur simultaneously.
Do not immediately repeat a failed-looking payment
Check whether the transaction is pending, completed, declined or refunded. Retain its ID, recipient details, amount, currency and timestamp. Contact the provider through its official channel; for mobile credit, give the operator the number and receipt.
Recall of a completed transfer is not guaranteed. Sending again before investigating may produce two debits. A refund on a different day can have a different GBP value because of exchange rates and charges. Do not give a person offering assistance in a chat bank verification codes, full app access or card details to “speed up the refund”.
