How to choose a hamster in the UK and prepare appropriate care

Prepare the enclosure first
Compare floor area rather than height or multiple levels. PDSA cites a minimum base of 100 × 50 cm and room for at least 25 cm of suitable burrowing bedding; more space is preferable. This is a welfare reference, not a universal British statutory minimum. Provide a secure lid, hiding places and enrichment.
Choose a quiet position away from direct sunlight, draughts and appliance noise. Prevent other animals reaching it. Do not choose a small cage solely because it is marketed as a hamster starter kit.
Choose the animal and source carefully
Consider a verifiable small-animal rescue. When buying, establish origin, species, age, sex, health and familiar food. For an English pet shop, check the applicable council licence. GOV.UK: animal activities licensing ↗.
PDSA recommends keeping pet hamsters separately: even dwarf hamsters may fight when housed together. Do not buy a pair simply to prevent loneliness.
Budget for everyday care
List a spacious enclosure, safe bedding, food, water provision, hides, suitable activity equipment and a carrier before acquiring the animal. Check replacement-supply costs and holiday-care arrangements. The animal's purchase price does not represent the care budget.
Do not wake a hamster for play. Teach children gentle handling under adult supervision; the adult remains responsible for food, water and health.
Find a vet beforehand
Use RCVS Find a Vet ↗ and confirm actual hamster experience, emergency cover and fees. Call a vet if the animal stops eating, becomes markedly weak or appears ill. Do not use medication intended for humans or another pet. Keep species and diet information available for the consultation.
