Garment steamer or iron: choosing for your clothes and UK home

Compare the formats
A handheld steamer may be easier to store in a small flat. Check its weight with a full tank and how many garments it can conveniently handle in one session. For an upright model, consider storage, stand height, hose length and stability.
For an iron or steam generator, assess the board, storage and movement of the whole setup. Maximum wattage alone is not a purchasing decision: water use, heating, working time and maintenance also affect everyday convenience.
Match it to the wardrobe
Compare garment restrictions with the appliance instructions. Embellishments, coatings and delicate materials may need a particular approach. Successful use on a cotton shirt does not establish suitability for every dress or jacket.
Ask whether a demonstration on a similar fabric is available. Steaming should not automatically be treated as a replacement for the specified care of a dry-clean-only item. When uncertain, begin with the clothing manufacturer's requirements.
Water and upkeep
Find the manual for the exact model and establish which water is permitted and how descaling works. Procedures can vary even within one manufacturer's range. Tefal provides model-specific instructions ↗.
Do not add fragrance or descaling products unless allowed. Check replacement-part availability and maintenance costs. For travel, verify the power specification and instructions separately; possessing an adaptor does not settle compatibility.
Before paying and using it
Include necessary accessories, a board or stand, delivery and storage in the cost comparison. Read the used-appliance return position and guarantee. If a shop permits, hold a handheld model in its working position: comfort may matter more than additional advertised features.
Follow the instructions, remove clothing from the wearer before treating it and arrange a suitable place for hot components. Keep the model information and paperwork. The useful appliance is the one you can conveniently use with your wardrobe, rather than the one with the longest list of promotional settings.
