Start with a dental assessment

Teeth and gums should be examined before whitening. The NHS ↗ recommends a dental practice or a dentist-supplied kit and warns about treatment elsewhere.

Check the professional through the GDC ↗. Hygienists and therapists require a dentist's prescription and the specified arrangements for initial use. A lamp, laser label or salon discount is not an adequate basis for selection.

Discuss the limits

Whitening changes natural tooth colour; crowns, implant crowns and other artificial restorations may retain their shade. Show the dentist all restorations and explain the result you want.

Mention sensitivity, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ask whether treatment is appropriate now and whether anything needs treating first. Different causes of discolouration do not necessarily respond alike.

Comparing offers

Establish whether the plan uses a home kit with custom trays, in-practice treatment or both. Check examination, trays, gel, reviews, additional supplies and support for sensitivity.

Cosmetic whitening is private. Request the full price and material-use instructions. An advertised session fee does not establish the total treatment or future maintenance cost.

Home-use safety

Follow the prescribed schedule rather than increasing exposure for faster results. Do not combine products or apply professional gel without suitable instructions.

Obtain a contact for questions and irritation. Discuss troublesome adverse effects with the dentist. Do not try to overcome sensitivity by continuing more intensive whitening; first review the product use and tooth health.
