Find a maker for your purpose

Everyday earrings, a wedding ring and a complex commission need different criteria. Start with materials, budget, comfort and repair options. A UK brand address does not necessarily mean every component is made in the UK; ask about the particular piece if origin matters.

The Goldsmiths' Centre directory ↗ introduces makers with different specialisms and commission services. Use it to explore portfolios rather than as a universal quality ranking or promise of immediate availability.

Compare material descriptions

Distinguish solid precious metal, plating and the underlying base. Gold plated is not solid gold. Ask about fineness, coating thickness, replating, dimensions and weight. For stones, discuss origin, treatments and suitable documentation where justified by value.

GOV.UK explains UK hallmarks ↗. Relevant precious-metal items have hallmarking requirements, with weight exemptions and other applicable conditions. A brand logo or isolated fineness number does not answer every question about a complete hallmark.

Fit and commissions

Measure ring size appropriately and discuss band width because wider rings feel different. Bracelets need suitable length, fastening and looseness. Avoid estimating an expensive gift's size solely from a photograph.

For bespoke work, agree the drawing, materials, approval stage, alteration costs and timeline. Establish what happens if an important date is missed. Cancellation of a commission and returns of ready-made stock may have different conditions.

After purchase

Request an accurately described receipt, care instructions and repair terms. Ask about resizing and renewing coatings. Keep valuable-item documents separately and discuss an up-to-date valuation if insurance requires one.

Disclose metal sensitivities before buying rather than relying only on hypoallergenic wording. Check the actual clasp and component materials. Choose clear specifications and comfortable wear as well as the label's popularity.
