Planning and verifying travel between the UK and Russia

As checked on 7 October 2026, FCDO advises against all travel to Russia ↗. This affects trip assessment and insurance. An old account of a completed journey does not establish current availability or safety.

If travel is necessary, identify the destination, dates and every passenger’s documents first. Check entry rules for the actual nationality. FCDO entry guidance ↗ primarily addresses British travellers and does not replace the requirements for another passport.

Research an airline connection

Compare date-specific itineraries on airline websites. For example, Turkish Airlines’ London–Moscow search ↗ lets you check options actually offered for sale. A destination page does not guarantee flights every day or eligibility with your documents.

Establish whether there is one ticket, who is responsible for the connection, whether baggage is checked through and where the next boarding pass is issued. Separate tickets require more contingency and may involve buying replacement travel if the first flight is delayed. Check transit visas and overnight entry separately.

Payments, belongings and returning

Confirm lawful available payment methods with the airline and locally. A card working in the UK should not be assumed to work in Russia. Check restrictions on goods, medication and cash in every country on the route. Avoid sanctions-evasion arrangements or other people’s payment credentials.

Retain flexibility

Read change, cancellation and refund terms for each segment and insurance conditions under current FCDO advice. Allow contingency time, funds and a possible extra overnight stay. Avoid tying a complex connection to an essential event without a spare day.

Recheck the airline, airport and official requirements before payment and each departure. Changed routing requires a fresh transit check. Another person’s successful trip does not guarantee your boarding or entry.
