Planning seasonal farm and pumpkin-picking visits

Check the event format first

A pumpkin patch may involve picking in a field, choosing pre-harvested pumpkins or attending a family event with activities. Other pick-your-own crops depend on season and harvest. Choose from the actual description rather than last year’s photographs.

Garsons in Esher ↗, for example, publishes its Pumpkin Parade and booking arrangements. Check the current season’s calendar and slots; an event announcement does not guarantee walk-in admission. Do not plan a visit from saved autumn advertising after the season has ended.

Separate admission from produce

Establish whether entry includes a pumpkin, how many and of what size, or whether produce costs extra. Check adult and child prices, free age categories and whether every attendee needs a reservation. If a farm pass is sold, ask whether its value can be used towards picked produce.

Confirm included areas: fields, animals, rides and workshops can have separate charges. Groups should book a compatible time rather than expect to meet inside after arriving in different slots.

Travel without a car

Plan from home to the entrance, including the final bus or walk. A nearby town name does not guarantee a suitable pedestrian route; country roads may lack pavements. Check weekend services, the return journey and advance taxi options.

Consider how you will carry heavy pumpkins. A strong bag, trolley or help from a companion may matter more than another attraction. Choose a venue with confirmed access or an organised outing if the journey is difficult.

Weather and practical preparation

Ask whether the event runs in rain, whether dates can change and what cancellation terms apply. Bring footwear for muddy fields, waterproof clothing and spare children’s clothes. Check toilets, food, pushchair access and dog rules.

Follow farm instructions around animals and wash hands at designated facilities. Avoid eating in animal areas. Recheck organiser updates before leaving: weather, harvest and field conditions can change the programme even with a pre-booked ticket.
