Buying wide-fit shoes in the UK

Width matters more than extra length

If shoes squeeze across the foot, buying a longer size can leave the heel slipping without resolving pressure. Look at width, toe-box shape and instep volume. Compare wide and extra-wide labels within each brand because letters do not guarantee identical lasts.

Hotter explains its width choices ↗, Clarks has a wide-fit range ↗, and Calla describes roomier forefoot designs ↗. These are shopping options, not medical recommendations or promises of universal comfort.

Check the fit in motion

Measure both feet and bring normal socks. Stand and walk rather than judging while seated. Assess toe position, heel security and seam pressure. Adjustable fastenings can change volume but cannot correct every unsuitable shape.

Bring prescribed or usual insoles. Ask whether the original footbed is removable and whether sufficient depth remains afterwards. For boots, measure the calf separately: a wide calf and a wide foot are different specifications.

In-store or online

Confirm the size and width at the particular shop before travelling. An entire online catalogue is rarely available in one branch. Ask to try several lasts for your purpose; everyday walking and short occasion wear involve different compromises.

For online orders, compare delivery, return postage and exchange costs. Overhead photographs do not show internal volume. Precise descriptions and brand fitting advice are more useful. Try shoes carefully indoors before wearing them outside.

When shopping is not enough

Persistent pain, damaged skin or a noticeable change in foot shape deserves discussion with an appropriate healthcare professional. A comfort label does not establish the cause of symptoms. Avoid choosing a therapeutic design purely from another buyer's review.

Retain the receipt and model name of a successful pair, but check repeat purchases too: an updated version may use a different last. Suitable shoes should support normal walking without making you grip with your toes to keep them on.
