A practical, train-first guide to English castles you can visit from London: royal palaces, dramatic ruins, riverside towns, sea cliffs and slow countryside days without renting a car.

First time

Windsor or Hampton Court: the easiest, prettiest and least stressful car-free choices.

Dramatic

Dover or Arundel: more journey, but the day feels like a real escape.

Slow

Hever, Leeds Castle or Highclere: gardens, water, grounds and breathing room.

Important

Opening hours, ticket prices and seasonal shuttles change. Check the castle website and trains on National Rail ↗.

Which castle should you choose first?

If this is your first castle day from London, choose Windsor or Hampton Court. They give you the most beauty for the least logistical effort. If you want the day to feel bigger, choose Dover, Arundel or Warwick. If you want a slower day with gardens, water and grounds, look at Hever, Leeds Castle, Highclere or Bodiam.

12 castles and historic places without a car

01 · FIRST CASTLE

Windsor Castle

The easiest royal castle day from London: the castle, Eton, riverside walks and a route that does not require complicated transfers. A good first choice when you want something beautiful but low-stress.

Without a car: take the train to Windsor & Eton Central or Windsor & Eton Riverside, then walk.

02 · TUDOR

Hampton Court Palace

Tudor history, gardens, the maze, Henry VIII’s kitchens and a palace day that can be done without leaving the London orbit for too long.

Without a car: take the train to Hampton Court, then walk across the bridge.

03 · SEA CLIFFS

Dover Castle

The most dramatic option: a fortress above the sea, white cliffs, wartime tunnels and the chance to add a coastal walk. It is a big day, but a memorable one.

Without a car: train to Dover Priory, then walk or use a local bus/taxi to the castle.

04 · STORYBOOK

Arundel Castle

A castle, cathedral, river walks, antique windows and a small town that feels properly complete. Choose it when you want an English storybook day with good food nearby.

Without a car: train to Arundel, then walk about 10-15 minutes.

07 · RUINS

Bodiam Castle

A picture-perfect moated ruin. It is not the simplest car-free option, but it is atmospheric, especially if you combine it with Rye or a countryside walk.

Lewes Castle

A small castle, independent shops, pubs and the South Downs nearby. Best when the castle is part of the day rather than the only reason to go.

12 · CATHEDRAL CITY

Canterbury and Westgate Towers

Not a classic castle day, but very good for medieval atmosphere: city gates, cathedral, old streets and food. An easy car-free day from London.

Without a car: train to Canterbury West or Canterbury East, then walk.

Tickets and logistics

In the UK, transport planning often decides how good the day feels. Before buying a ticket, check not only the train price but also the last mile from the station to the castle: some are walkable, some need a bus, shuttle or short taxi. Be extra careful with Bodiam, Hever, Highclere and Leeds Castle.

Book ahead

For popular castles and weekends, book the entrance ticket and train in advance when you can.

Check season

Some houses and gardens are not open year-round or have shorter hours outside summer.

Watch last entry

Last entry can be much earlier than site closing time. Do not arrive too late.

Plan B

If rain or rail disruption hits, Hampton Court, Windsor, Rochester or Canterbury are easier fallback days.
