Camping near water around London

Access to a bank, permission to pitch a tent and permission to swim are separate matters. A lake on a map does not establish a camping right. GOV.UK ↗ explains that ordinary open-access rights do not include camping or water sports; choose an authorised site or obtain the necessary landowner permission.
Near London, Lee Valley Almost Wild Campsite in Broxbourne ↗ is a possible starting point. It is an organised campsite near waterside scenery, rather than permission to camp anywhere in the valley.
Match the facilities to your needs
Check drinking water, toilets, showers, electricity and washing-up facilities. Almost-wild camping offers simpler facilities than a conventional family campsite. Ask about tent sizes, age restrictions, dogs and group bookings.
Establish how far you must carry equipment from the drop-off point. A short walk becomes more demanding with a tent and food. For pre-pitched accommodation, check mattresses, bedding and cooking equipment separately.
Water and walking
Read Lee Valley water-safety guidance ↗ and local signs. A scenic bank or nearby anglers do not make a lake suitable for swimming. Choose a specifically authorised swimming venue with its own supervision and conditions if swimming is your priority.
For walking, download a suitable circular route. Account for closed paths, ground conditions and sunset. Keep children appropriately away from water and do not treat a calm surface as evidence of safety.
Book and prepare
Compare pitch charges, per-person fees, parking or transfers, hire and permitted cooking methods. Confirm campfire rules with the actual campsite; dry-weather restrictions can change them.
Check the forecast, public transport and cancellation policy before travelling. Bring season-appropriate sleeping equipment, waterproofs, lighting and food. For a first trip, one night on an official site is more manageable than an isolated shore with uncertain access and sanitation.
