Depositing foreign-currency cash into a UK bank account

Being able to hold EUR or USD in an app does not mean you can take those banknotes to a counter. A multi-currency service may accept bank transfers only. Ask specifically about a cash deposit in the required currency rather than a general currency-account top-up.
State the amount, currency, denominations and account type. Establish which branches handle it, whether an appointment is needed and whether funds remain in the original currency or must be converted to GBP. Do not post banknotes using ordinary cheque-deposit instructions.
Check the banking route
HSBC’s Currency Account illustrates a separate foreign-currency product ↗. Its facilities, eligibility and deposit arrangements must be checked against current conditions. This is not general permission for customers of every bank or every HSBC app product.
If the bank accepts notes, request the rate, fee, crediting time and note-condition requirements. Otherwise compare a formal exchange into pounds followed by a sterling deposit. Post Office explains purchasing foreign cash from customers ↗; confirm the particular branch’s conditions first.
Prepare the source-of-funds evidence
Assemble evidence of how you obtained the cash and its subsequent trail: a withdrawal statement, sale agreement, gift evidence or other relevant documents. Retain applicable customs documentation for money brought across a border. An exchange receipt proves conversion but may not establish the original source.
Ask which documents require translation. Do not deposit someone else’s money as your own or split an amount deliberately to evade limits or review. Check any underlying tax event separately: a bank accepting a deposit does not provide tax advice.
Verify the outcome
Obtain a receipt and compare the currency, amount and deductions with the agreed terms. Keep the rate used for automatic conversion. Do not authorise another transaction until the first transaction’s status is clear.
If refused, ask whether the issue concerns the product, currency, branch or missing documents. A transfer from your own overseas account may have different arrangements, but that route also needs checking. A paid intermediary cannot be assumed to override bank restrictions.
