Compare the actual transaction

Decide whether you are buying foreign cash with pounds or selling existing currency for pounds. Buy and sell rates differ. Request the final amount for the same quantity of banknotes, including every fee, rather than comparing a “0% commission” sign.

Check whether the quoted rate applies online or in branch, whether reservation is required and how long the quote lasts. For unusual currencies, older series or damaged notes, confirm acceptance through an official contact before travelling.

Check the exchange provider’s conditions

For example, Post Office explains currency buyback and finding a suitable branch ↗. Branches do not all offer identical services. Requirements for an original purchase receipt can also vary; ask about the currency, amount and documents in advance.

For a large exchange, request the identification and source-of-funds requirements. Having a sterling bank account does not mean the bank accepts foreign notes directly. If your aim is to deposit the money, coordinate that next step with the bank rather than carrying cash between unsuitable branches.

Exchange with a receipt

Count the notes and confirm the final rate before authorising the exchange. Obtain a receipt showing the date, both currency amounts, commission and provider details. Check the cash received at the counter.

Do not hand money to an unknown intermediary promising a better private rate. A person-to-person exchange does not provide the same documentation and dispute process as a formal transaction. Avoid using other people’s cards or explanations that misrepresent the funds’ origin.

Keep the source-of-funds trail

For money withdrawn overseas, retain the withdrawal statement and exchange receipt. Keep separate evidence where it came from income, a gift or a property sale. Converting currency does not turn taxable income into tax-free money.

Before depositing pounds, check banking limits and cash-service locations. Being able to deposit exchanged money does not mean no review can occur. If there is a discrepancy, contact the exchange provider with the receipt and precise calculation, rather than only a photograph of an advertised rate without the applicable conditions.
