Wait for the invitation and check the deadline

A successful adult naturalisation applicant needs a citizenship ceremony. Approval and ceremony booking are separate stages. GOV.UK specifies three months ↗ from receiving the Home Office invitation; also follow your individual instructions.

Check your name, reference and the local authority handling the case. Keep the letter and receipt date. If approval has arrived but council instructions have not, ask the designated authority about its process rather than making a parallel booking elsewhere using somebody else's link.

Contact the designated council

The local authority organises the ceremony. The usual format is a group ceremony, although you can ask about a private one. Start with the council website and official invitation details. If you want a different council or have moved, agree the change with the bodies handling your case: an available appointment elsewhere does not mean your certificate has been transferred.

Ask about dates, required documents, identity checks, accessibility and guests. The general guidance ↗ usually allows two guests, but confirm the actual attendance arrangements beforehand. Do not promise relatives or children places without checking local conditions.

Compare costs and prepare

The ordinary ceremony fee is included in the application charge. A council may charge extra for a private ceremony; establish the total before selecting a date. Photographs, videos and other optional services can be separate. Compare the group option's cost and timing as well as appointment convenience.

Bring the invitation and documents required by the council. During the ceremony, you make an oath or non-religious affirmation and a pledge. You receive your certificate of British citizenship afterwards. Check its details immediately; Form AN guidance ↗ explains how to correct an error.

Plan your passport and travel

After the ceremony, status evidence and entry rules change. The certificate is not a passport. For travel, check the British passport, certificate of entitlement or applicable exception in current guidance. AN guidance ↗ also contains the 2026 update on destroying a retained BRP/BRC after the ceremony; check it alongside your individual instructions.

If you are temporarily overseas, agree the timing rather than postponing the ceremony yourself. GOV.UK warns that an application made in the UK cannot have its ceremony abroad. Allow time for a first British passport before booking another international journey.
