Contacting your local MP about an individual problem

Use UK Parliament's official postcode search ↗. A famous MP elsewhere is generally not the first contact for constituency casework. Recheck current names and details because older chat advice may concern a previous Parliament.
MPs represent constituencies in the Commons. Councillors, devolved-parliament representatives and MPs have different responsibilities. Parliament explains whom to contact ↗. Choose according to the issue and responsible organisation.
Make a realistic request
You can request help investigating delayed public-body correspondence, making an enquiry or identifying further steps. An MP cannot replace a court, issue a visa or promise your preferred decision. Writing does not automatically suspend appeal or other legal deadlines.
Use the appropriate urgent route simultaneously where needed. Danger requires emergency assistance; an approaching legal deadline may require qualified advice. Parliamentary casework can accompany those actions without delaying them.
Write a clear message
Include name, address and postcode to establish constituency connection. Briefly identify the issue, organisation, case reference, correspondence dates and responses. End with a specific request, such as asking for an explanation of delay or the responsible department.
Attach relevant documents only and remove unrelated third-party information. The office may request consent before raising a case. Use official contacts and ask about secure transfer of sensitive records rather than sending an entire archive unsolicited.
Follow up
Retain the message and acknowledgement. Check constituency-surgery and appointment arrangements. Ask about interpretation, documents and booking; attendance may not be an unrestricted walk-in queue.
If necessary, send a short reminder with the original date and new developments. Sending identical material to hundreds of MPs rarely clarifies an individual local case. Maintain your own chronology and continue observing deadlines in the underlying process.
