Discuss alternatives first

Begin with assessment and whether an implant is the right option. Alternatives may include a bridge, denture or no intervention in particular circumstances. Gum health, bone, bite, medical conditions and medicines all need consideration.

Guy's and St Thomas' ↗ describes staged treatment involving assessment, placement and restoration; not everyone needs bone grafting.

Check the team

Establish who performs surgery, who provides the crown and who is responsible overall. Check the dentists through the GDC ↗. Advertising as an implant specialist deserves careful verification of actual qualifications; using a particular implant brand does not establish expertise.

Ask about individual risks, healing times and the plan if integration fails. Find out where complications are managed.

Compare complete estimates

An implant-only price may exclude the crown. Request assessment, imaging, extraction, any graft, implant, abutment, temporary and definitive restoration, and reviews. Do not assume routine NHS dental charges automatically cover implants: access is restricted and assessed separately.

Confirm the implant system and documentation you will receive. Ask about guarantee conditions, compulsory reviews and exclusions. A lifetime promise is not a substitute for specific contractual terms.

Plan maintenance

Obtain cleaning instructions and a review schedule. Implants need care; individual components can loosen or wear. Discuss maintenance costs before treatment starts.

If you expect to move or have treatment abroad, check whether the system can be serviced later. Do not choose solely on placement speed: an accountable team after surgery is particularly important.
