How to choose a dermatologist in London and obtain a referral

Tell your GP when the skin problem began, how it changes, treatments tried and its effect on sleep or daily life. Bring dated photographs of changes if available. Dermatology covers different concerns, including inflammatory conditions, acne, hair and suspicious lesions.
For a changing mole, do not first book cosmetic removal. The NHS advises checking changes in size, shape, colour and other new symptoms ↗. Clinical assessment determines urgency.
NHS referral
A GP may treat some conditions directly or request specialist input ↗. Some pathways use photographs and remote assessment; this does not necessarily prevent an in-person examination when needed.
Ask the referral's purpose, selected service and what to do if symptoms worsen. When treatment has failed, explain actual duration and use rather than giving only the cream's name.
Checking a private doctor
Check the doctor and dermatology specialty through the GMC ↗. A skin-specialist advertising label alone does not establish medical qualifications. Ask about experience with your condition and age group.
Obtain insurance approval: cosmetic procedures and disease treatment may have different coverage. For self-payment, clarify initial and follow-up fees and whether a referral is required.
Preparation, tests and the plan
Bring all products with ingredients, allergies, medical history and earlier reports. Ask whether the area should be free of makeup. Do not stop prescribed treatment without instructions.
Check separate charges for dermoscopy, biopsy, pathology, removal and results discussion. Obtain a written plan specifying treatment, duration, review timing and responsibility for results. Do not purchase an equipment-based treatment package before understanding the diagnosis and expected benefit. Seek urgent care for substantial deterioration rather than waiting for the routine appointment.
