How cancer referral and clinic choice work in England

See your GP for a new or persistent symptom and describe its development. When indicated, the GP arranges an urgent suspected-cancer referral. The first specialist may be an organ-specific doctor, surgeon or diagnostic team; an oncologist appointment is not always the first step.
The NHS explains specialist referrals ↗. An urgent pathway seeks a prompt answer rather than establishing that cancer is already present.
After referral
England's Faster Diagnosis Standard aims to confirm or rule out cancer within 28 days of urgent referral. Appointments or tests are often earlier; this is a system standard rather than an identical timetable guaranteed to everyone. The NHS describes waiting arrangements ↗.
Ask which service received the referral and how invitations arrive. Be available for proposed dates. Contact the GP and service if no message arrives or symptoms worsen; silence is not reassurance.
Clinic choice and second opinions
With a diagnosis, relevant tumour expertise, a multidisciplinary team, appropriate investigations and a coordinated plan matter. Check private doctors through the GMC ↗. Approve the proposed treatment stage with insurance rather than only the first discussion.
For a second opinion, gather pathology reports, imaging reports and original images where available, treatment details and specific questions. Clarify whether samples need review and who arranges transfer. Discuss timing so the opinion does not create an unexplained treatment delay.
Results and support
Establish who communicates each result, when the plan will be discussed and your main contact. Record treatment goals, alternatives, side effects and support needs.
Macmillan ↗ provides routes to emotional support. Acute deterioration requires the team's designated service or emergency care. Do not replace diagnosis with an all-purpose commercial tumour-marker panel or cancel treatment because of group-chat advice.
