Verify the instructor's qualification

Paid driving tuition in Great Britain must be provided by an approved driving instructor or a registered trainee. A windscreen badge identifies their status: green for a qualified instructor and pink for a trainee. The DVSA lesson guide ↗ explains this and confirms there is no compulsory minimum number of lesson hours.

Begin with the official instructor search ↗ for your area. Listing is voluntary, so absence does not prove that an instructor is unqualified. DVSA can check their name and ADI number. A personal recommendation is useful, but it does not replace verification.

Explain your goal before the first lesson

Say whether you need beginner lessons, preparation for a British test after overseas driving experience, or refresher lessons following a break. Specify manual or automatic, preferred teaching language, starting location and available times. For confidence-building, identify particular situations such as roundabouts, parking, motorways or evening traffic.

Ask for an introductory lesson or initial assessment. Afterwards, you should understand which skills need attention and how progress will be measured. Rudeness, repeated distractions and pressure to buy a large package immediately are reasons to choose another instructor.

Compare the total cost

There is no single government lesson tariff. Ask about lesson length, price, block discounts, package expiry and refunds for unused lessons. Clarify cancellation notice, late arrivals, vehicle changes and replacement instructors.

Check the price and availability of a car on test day, including time before and after the appointment. Compare offers covering the same service. Prepaying for a block does not guarantee a pass within that number of hours.

Coordinate the test and private practice

The learner must now personally book their car practical test ↗. Agree on car availability with your instructor first; an offer to arrange a slot does not replace DVSA's current rules.

For practice with a relative, separately check insurance, L plates and supervisor requirements in the official private practice guidance ↗. Someone with automatic-only entitlement cannot supervise a manual learner. Keep a brief lesson log recording the skill practised, feedback and next target. This gives you observable evidence of readiness rather than relying only on the number of paid lessons.
