Establish what you are buying

Ask the retailer whether the flights form one connecting journey or separate self-transfer bookings. Using one website and receiving one itinerary email do not answer that question. Request the missed-connection protection terms and establish who would rebook the next flight and pay for a replacement.

The CAA distinguishes connecting journeys from self-transfers ↗: separate bookings are treated as separate flights. Any extra guarantee sold by an aggregator has its own conditions and is not the same as an airline's responsibility for one connecting itinerary.

What connection time includes

Comparing the first aircraft's arrival time with the second flight's departure is insufficient. Include disembarkation, changing terminals, immigration, baggage reclaim, new check-in, security and gate closure. With checked luggage, the bag-drop deadline also matters.

There is no universally safe minimum of one or two hours. Confirm the required connection time with the airline and review the airport layout. For example, Stansted states ↗ that requirements vary by route and airline; its procedures cannot be applied to every airport.

Borders and baggage

Ask whether baggage will be checked to the final airport and inspect the destination code on the tag. A self-transfer may require collecting a suitcase and entering the public area. You then need permission to enter the connecting country even if you are not visiting the city.

Check transit and entry documents for your nationality separately. UK immigration status does not guarantee visa-free entry elsewhere. Do not purchase a short connection assuming these issues can be resolved after landing.

If the first flight is delayed

For a protected connection, contact the airline promptly for onward instructions. Keep boarding passes, notices, actual arrival times and receipts for necessary expenses.

Under the CAA's delay guidance ↗, self-transfer does not create an overall statutory right to care, compensation or transport to the final destination because you miss a separately booked flight. Rights relating to each individual flight still apply. Check your insurance and retailer protection before purchasing a replacement. For an essential trip, weigh the saving against a longer connection or overnight stop.
