Start with the exact airport, terminal and airline requirements for arrival, check-in and bag drop. Work backwards to include reaching the terminal, travelling and a disruption buffer. Having London in an airport's name does not imply a short journey from your neighbourhood.
Compare complete door-to-terminal journeys. A cheap train involving two changes and a taxi to the station may cost more than a direct coach or a shared vehicle for several passengers.
Train and coach options
Use the transport pages for your particular airport. For example, Stansted lists trains, coaches and taxis ↗. Check the actual date, first and last departures, engineering work and the walk from the station or stop. Do not assume that overnight or holiday services match an ordinary weekday timetable.
For coaches, check the boarding point, baggage allowance and flexibility if your return flight is delayed. National Express requires the boarding point shown on the ticket ↗. A similarly named stop or another stop on the route is not a substitute for the correct booking.
Vehicles for families or substantial luggage
Give the operator passenger numbers and an itemised luggage list: large and small cases, pushchairs and child seats. Request confirmation of the vehicle category and capacity. Passenger seating does not indicate boot space.
Ask for a total price including parking, airport charges, waiting and overnight or holiday supplements. Check cancellation terms, delayed pickup arrangements and the dispatcher contact. London private hire must be booked through a licensed operator ↗. Paying in advance does not remove the need to understand reservation conditions.
Early departures and holidays
Check the specific night and calendar date. If public transport cannot get you there with a useful buffer, compare a confirmed vehicle reservation with staying near the airport. Do not base an important flight connection on a driver who might happen to be available overnight.
For the return, provide the flight number but agree when waiting time starts: landing, leaving the terminal or an appointed time. Use the airport's current pickup rules ↗ to arrange the meeting. Save tickets, booking details, the meeting point and a backup route offline.
