Flu and COVID-19 eligibility differ. Do not rely on last year's invitation or another person's age. This describes England's 2026/27 season; elsewhere in the UK, check the relevant national NHS service.
Criteria can change, so consult the NHS flu page ↗ and NHS COVID-19 page ↗ before booking.
Flu
The free adult programme includes people aged 65 or over, including those turning 65 by 31 March 2027, specified long-term conditions, pregnancy and other listed groups. These include main carers of older or disabled people and those living with someone with a weakened immune system. Children have a separate programme.
Give the specific condition or eligibility basis when booking. Describing something as chronic does not automatically establish eligibility under every criterion. Health and social-care workers should first check their employer's offer.
COVID-19
The winter programme covers people aged 75 or over, including those turning 75 by 31 January 2027; residents of care homes for older adults; and people aged six months or above whose immune system is weakened by a condition or treatment. This is narrower than the flu programme.
If uncertain about medicines or immune status, ask the GP, pharmacist or treating specialist. Previous doses alone do not establish eligibility for this season.
Booking and preparation
If eligible, use the NHS App, official online booking or an available local service. A COVID-19 invitation is not required. Check that the chosen location offers the appropriate vaccine for your age.
Mention previous serious allergic reactions, current fever and treatment. Both vaccinations may sometimes be given at the same visit; arrange this when booking. For private vaccination, confirm availability and price beforehand. Keep the dose record and instructions on obtaining help for adverse reactions.
