Clothing for London weather and a first short walk in the countryside

Forecast and route
Check the destination and intended hours for wind, rain, temperature and ground conditions. For upland routes, use dedicated mountain information rather than central London's forecast alone. The Met Office explains weather considerations for hill walking ↗.
Establish distance, terrain, ways to shorten the walk and transport access. A city path and a remote winter slope require different preparation. Buying clothing does not replace suitable experience or choosing a route within your capabilities.
Layers and weather protection
Compare base clothing, added insulation and an outer layer against wind and rain. It is useful to add or remove part of the outfit without changing everything. Try a jacket over the layers you expect to wear.
Distinguish general water-resistant marketing from the specified use conditions of a waterproof product. Assess the hood, fastenings, length, arm movement and care. Do not assume every urban coat is suitable for prolonged exposure to rain.
Footwear and practical extras
Choose shoes for the surface and duration, try them with the intended socks and assess movement. Do not begin a long walk in an untested new pair merely because it is labelled hiking.
Plan a spare dry layer and protection for important belongings. The Met Office's winter-walking advice ↗ also discusses limits of electronic navigation in poor conditions. Your kit must fit the route rather than photographs on social media.
Buy only what fills a gap
Review your existing wardrobe and list the functions missing. Compare the complete outfit, care and the ability to dry it at home. An expensive material can offer poor value if its maintenance is impractical for you.
Before paying, distinguish returns after fitting from returns after outdoor use. Keep labels and care instructions. A useful first purchase addresses a specific problem: getting wet, unsuitable shoes or lacking wind protection. If route conditions worsen, reconsider the plan itself rather than relying only on new equipment.
