Shopping for milk-free, soya-free, gluten-free or low-sugar food in the UK

Define the precise restriction

Milk allergy, lactose intolerance and choosing plant-based food require different searches. Lactose-free does not mean milk-protein-free. Gluten-free differs from wheat-free, and no added sugar differs from containing no sugars.

List the ingredients to avoid using clear English names. For a medical restriction, follow professional advice rather than adapting it to a convenient supermarket category. A free-from aisle can contain products excluding different ingredients.

Read the complete label

GOV.UK explains allergen labelling ↗: highlighted ingredients, free-from claims and precautionary warnings have different meanings. Vegan is not a guarantee that a particular allergen is absent. Read all information rather than only the front of the pack.

Check every new package, including familiar brands. Recipes, production arrangements and warnings can change. If your ingredient is outside the main highlighted allergens, do not expect to find it only in bold text.

Online shopping and substitutes

Use filters for an initial shortlist, then open the selected item's ingredients. Request an up-to-date label if uncertain or choose a product with clear information. An old packaging photograph online does not replace checking the delivered item.

Disable unsuitable substitutions and identify acceptable alternatives beforehand. Different flavours and sizes within a brand can have different contents. Compare price per kilogram, dates and delivery; specialist products often come in smaller packs.

Ordering prepared food

The official eating-out guidance ↗ explains what to ask restaurants and takeaway providers. State the precise restriction and ask about equipment, sauces, garnishes and cross-contamination. Vegan wording or removing cheese does not answer every question.

For shared deliveries, request labelled containers. If information is unclear, do not guess ingredients from appearance. Record successful products but check them again next time. Aim for a manageable, repeatable basket meeting your needs rather than buying everything in a specialist category.
