Find the agreement and term

Collect your joining confirmation, tariff and the terms in force when purchased. Identify the minimum commitment, end date, notice and cancellation method. Monthly payment can still fund an annual obligation; monthly does not guarantee unrestricted cancellation.

Check whether the contract is with the gym or a separate payment-management company. For a recent distance purchase, separately establish applicable cancellation rights and early service conditions. Do not assume identical cooling-off arrangements online and at reception.

Give clear notice

Use the prescribed form, app or address and retain submission evidence. Include your membership number, intention to end, requested date, and a request to confirm the final payment and access end. Speaking to a trainer or deleting an app is insufficient evidence of cancellation.

For illness, relocation or job loss, check early termination and freeze terms. Provide only necessary evidence. A freeze is generally a pause under its own rules rather than termination; ask whether it extends the minimum term.

Handle Direct Debit separately

The official Direct Debit guidance ↗ explains cancellation through your bank. Stopping the payment method does not establish whether the contract has ended or notice-period charges remain payable. Deal with contractual termination and the payment instruction separately.

If a payment is incorrectly collected after cancelling the instruction, discuss the Direct Debit Guarantee with your bank. A bank refund does not automatically determine that no contractual debt exists. Keep statements and the gym’s response.

Challenge disputed charges

Request a written calculation and exact contractual basis. CMA guidance explains fair terms ↗: inclusion in a signed contract does not automatically make every restriction or charge lawful. Equally, an inconvenient price or term is not necessarily unfair; context matters.

Submit a formal complaint with evidence and your requested resolution. If unresolved, seek the appropriate consumer advice service for your UK nation and establish next steps. Do not ignore demands or court documents while disputing the matter. Keep closure confirmation and check the next statement.
