Start with a consultation

Balayage describes a colouring approach; it does not guarantee a particular level of blonde or eliminate maintenance. Send daylight photographs, your colouring history and the intended result. Mention home dye, henna, previous lightening and any reactions.

Ask whether the shade is achievable in one visit. Correcting dark colour may involve a different budget, longer appointments and several stages. Do not choose the cheapest highlights slot before the salon assesses your starting colour.

Tests and preparation

Check testing requirements for the chosen system and whether a preliminary visit is needed. Headmasters publishes its own patch-test policy ↗, including timing before colour. Follow the salon's and manufacturer's instructions rather than replacing them with someone else's chat advice.

The NHS explains hair dye reactions ↗. If you have reacted previously, obtain medical advice instead of trying another application to prove it is safe. Call 999 for sudden swelling of the mouth or throat or difficulty breathing.

Check a package price carefully

The quote should make clear whether lightening or colour, toner, washing, cutting and blow-drying are included. Ask about extra product for thick or long hair, correction of existing colour and additional treatments.

As an example, the Headmasters package ↗, checked on 7 October 2026, lists £150 for half-head and £170 for full-head services including toner, cut and blow-dry. It applies on selected days, with stylist restrictions and possible supplements; it is not a general London price. Obtain a personal confirmation.

Budget for maintaining the colour

Discuss how regrowth will look, when the shade may need refreshing and what later appointments cost. Ask for a realistic care plan without assuming you must buy a large product bundle. Explain regular swimming and your usual styling routine.

Avoid scheduling a first complex blonde service immediately before an important event. Allow time to assess the shade in daylight and contact the salon if it differs from the agreed result. Keep the quote, photographs and aftercare advice.
