Separate repair from file recovery

If photographs or documents are the priority, say so first. Replacing a drive and reinstalling the system can make a laptop work without preserving its original data. Do not authorise formatting before discussing the objective and existing copies.

With suspected drive damage or liquid exposure, stop repeated start-up attempts and seek suitable assessment. Avoid running random recovery software on the only copy of valuable files because new writes can complicate later recovery.

Choose relevant expertise

Ask about your model, diagnosis fees and workmanship guarantees. Screen replacement and recovery from a physically damaged drive need different skills. Establish whether work is done locally or passed to another company.

Record serial number, accessories and condition with photographs. Check manufacturer or employer service arrangements if applicable before proceeding. Avoid opening the device without understanding the relevant support conditions.

Price and privacy

Get a written breakdown of diagnosis, parts, labour, VAT and additional actions. For recovery, define success: the required files or any recovered data. Read exclusions behind no-data-no-fee wording.

Agree minimum necessary access, confidentiality and temporary-copy deletion. A screen test does not ordinarily justify sharing your main email or bank password. Encrypted-drive work may require a key; discuss why and how it will be handled securely.

Check and back up

Test agreed functions, important files and charging after repair. Obtain the work description and guarantee terms. Make another copy of recovered data before treating the original drive as the sole store again.
