Build a compact route

A West End option links Oxford Circus, Regent Street, Carnaby and Piccadilly Circus, with Covent Garden optional. This is a suggested order rather than compulsory mileage. Starting and finishing near usable transport is easier than retracing every step.

Visit London provides lights and route ideas ↗. Choose two priorities and optional extras. A short section with a break may suit limited walking better than the full popular itinerary.

Timing

Check current-year switch-on dates and operating hours. Regent Street publishes its 2026 festive announcement ↗. Different streets need not switch on together; an October announcement does not mean every display is already lit.

Choose according to crowds and your schedule. A Saturday evening can be busier than a weekday. An empty promotional photograph is not an attendance forecast.

Costs and breaks

Ordinary street decorations differ from paid bus tours and enclosed light trails. For a guided product, establish route, language, duration and inclusions. An independent street walk needs navigation and transport rather than a ticket for every road.

Choose somewhere to warm up and use toilets. Nearby cafés may be full at peak times. Families need food, fatigue and shortening options considered before the final stop.

Travel and photographs

Check TfL ↗ and station restrictions. Save the map offline and agree a meeting place. Safe crossings matter more than camera angles; avoid stepping into traffic for a photograph.

Keep shop entrances and pavements clear. Rain or strong wind can justify limiting the plan to one area. Decorations recur annually, but routes and dates need checking each season.
