Planning Christmas activities in London

Separate the season from Christmas Day

Lights, markets and shows can operate long before 25 December without opening on Christmas Day itself. Start with Visit London's seasonal listings ↗, then verify each organiser.

For a short visit, choose one main paid activity with a nearby free walk. Several distant light trails rarely fit comfortably into one evening. Allow for darkness, weather and the journey home.

Lights, theatre and markets

Street decorations differ from ticketed light trails. Christmas shows and pantomimes need age, language, duration and cast checks. Markets can have separately priced rides and admission restrictions even where some browsing is free.

Read Kew's official Christmas information ↗. Checked on 7 October, the 2026 season runs from 13 November to 3 January 2027 with specified closure dates. Ordinary daytime Kew tickets neither admit to Christmas at Kew nor upgrade directly to it.

Tickets and budget

Check time slot, entrance, lateness, cancellation and weather terms. Families need all age categories, travel, food and extras included. Cheap admission cannot establish the cost of several attractions.

For festive dining, confirm menu, advance payment and kitchen hours. Ordinary opening times may not apply on holidays. Coordinate group bookings before purchasing incompatible slots.

Transport and alternatives

Use TfL ↗ for the actual date, particularly Christmas and New Year holidays. A public holiday is not necessarily a normal Sunday service. Recheck later if seasonal timetables remain unpublished.

Save tickets and maps offline and identify indoor rest nearby. Follow organiser updates during severe weather rather than assuming either automatic refunds or guaranteed operation. A manageable number of bookings leaves more room to enjoy the season.
