How much does nursery cost in England and what funding is available?

Читать на русскомEngland has no single nursery fee. Bills depend on age, postcode, days, session length and funding. Request two quotations for the same schedule: without support and with the specific entitlement applied. This shows the household's actual cost.
Find a place and check its terms
Use the council's Family Information Service and GOV.UK childcare search ↗ to identify registered providers. Check the current Ofsted report, age group, opening hours, waiting list and settling-in arrangements. Establish whether the nursery accepts the relevant funded hours and has space on your required days.
Request the tariff, minimum sessions, payment during closures and absence, deposit and notice terms. Do not pay solely on an assurance that funding will definitely follow.
Check entitlement
All three- and four-year-olds in England have a universal entitlement of 15 weekly hours for 38 weeks, starting from the prescribed date. Eligible working parents can receive 30 hours from nine months to four years; conditions consider work, income, partners and immigration status. Some two-year-olds qualify through a separate Early Learning route. GOV.UK: available support ↗.
For the working-parents scheme, obtain the code in time, give it to the provider and reconfirm details every three months. Check deadlines and eligibility on GOV.UK ↗; not every working household qualifies.
Understand the remaining bill
A provider may offer fewer weekly funded hours across more weeks through a stretched arrangement. Ask how this affects monthly bills and chargeable hours.
Current guidance requires funded hours to be accessible free of charge. Meals, consumables and additional activities can be charged separately, but extras connected with the free hours must be voluntary; discuss alternatives. DfE: charging rules from April 2026 ↗.
Agree payment before starting
Request a written sample month itemising funded hours, additional hours, food and other charges. Check Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit childcare against your own circumstances; they cannot be received together. Query disputed charges for free hours with the nursery and council early years team. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland operate their own schemes.
