Bleeding, bad breath, gum changes or loose teeth are reasons to see a dentist. The NHS gum-disease guide ↗ explains that treatment depends on severity and may require specialist input.
Request urgent dental assessment for very sore swollen gums, loosening teeth or concerning mouth changes. Prolonged self-treatment with mouthwash does not replace examination.
Questions for the first visit
Ask about the diagnosis, necessary measurements and images, affected areas and factors influencing prognosis. Mention diabetes, smoking, medicines and implants.
Distinguish routine polishing from structured periodontitis treatment. Request an initial plan and reassessment date. If referred, clarify the purpose and any treatment needed beforehand.
Choosing specialist care
Check periodontics in the GDC specialist lists ↗ when specialist status is advertised. NHS referral is arranged by the treating dentist under local criteria; Guy's and St Thomas' ↗ is one example of a specialist service.
For private care, ask about direct booking and transferring records. Compare diagnosis, treatment stages, anaesthetic, reassessment and maintenance appointments. A generic cleaning fee may not reflect the necessary work.
Plan continued care
Discuss home-cleaning technique and suitable interdental tools. Obtain measurable objectives and a review schedule. After active treatment, an individual maintenance plan is more useful than a promise of a permanent one-session cure.
Establish whether follow-up is with the specialist, general dentist or hygienist. Reduced bleeding alone is not a reason to abandon monitoring.
