How to arrange a private MRI in the UK and check referral requirements

Agree the body area and clinical question with a clinician before buying private MRI. A precautionary whole-body scan differs from targeted investigation. Extra images may produce incidental findings without answering the original question.

Check referral requirements

Requirements depend on the provider and scan. Nuffield Health explicitly requires a healthcare professional's referral and reviews requests from GPs or external consultants. Nuffield Health: MRI booking ↗.

Without a request, arrange consultation rather than choosing areas and contrast yourself. Establish which previous images and reports are needed to avoid unnecessary repetition.

Agree protocol and safety

Mention pacemakers, implants, metal fragments, operations, possible pregnancy and kidney problems if contrast is considered. Bring implant documentation. Do not assume all modern implants are safe: radiology staff verify the exact device and conditions. NHS: MRI ↗.

Discuss claustrophobia support, scanner options and any medication or sedation in advance. Sedation changes preparation, escort and transport requirements; do not take sedatives without agreement.

Check body regions, contrast, radiologist report, images, consultation and follow-up. Guide prices can change after request review. Obtain insurance authorisation for the exact scan and site before booking.

Check the regulated English diagnostic service through CQC ↗. Ask about turnaround, urgent findings and incomplete scans caused by movement or intolerance.

Connect results to clinical care

Establish who receives and explains the report. Request image access in a useful format and give findings to your treating clinician. An MRI report does not replace diagnosis, examination and treatment planning.

Normal imaging cannot exclude every symptom cause. New dangerous neurological symptoms, serious trauma or rapid deterioration require urgent care rather than waiting for a private slot. Discuss intended NHS follow-up in advance; paying for a scan does not automatically confer NHS referral priority.
