Can you book a private thyroid ultrasound without a GP referral?

Private thyroid ultrasound may be available through diagnostic clinics, but referral requirements vary. Before paying, establish the clinical question and who will interpret the result. Imaging alone is not a complete thyroid health check.

Identify what needs assessment

Ultrasound examines structure and nodules; thyroid function is usually assessed through other investigations, including blood tests. Normal function does not exclude a lump, and a nodule does not necessarily alter hormones. NHS hospital information explains thyroid lumps ↗.

See a GP for a new lump, growing swelling or persistent voice change. Breathing difficulty requires urgent help rather than waiting for a convenient scan. NHS: thyroid symptoms ↗.

Check private booking requirements

Ask whether self-referral is accepted, a UK clinician's request is required and who interprets findings. Overseas requests may not meet internal requirements. Establish whether the appointment includes only imaging or also an endocrinology or ENT consultation.

Check the regulated English diagnostic service through CQC ↗. Ask who performs the scan, signs the report and has thyroid-imaging experience.

Compare complete costs

Obtain a written quotation for the scan, radiologist report, images and consultation. Blood tests, biopsy and follow-up generally require separate decisions and charges. Obtain insurer authorisation beforehand.

Confirm turnaround, transfer to the requesting clinician and urgent-findings procedures. If biopsy is recommended, establish who arranges it and when; seek a clinical explanation before purchasing further procedures.

Connect the result to continuing care

Bring previous images and reports, including dates and measurements. Obtain the new report and image access. Ask what changed, what monitoring is needed and who organises it.

Ultrasound cannot always definitively establish a nodule's nature. Clinical assessment and sometimes further tests are needed. Return to a GP or specialist for persistent symptoms despite a reassuring commercial report. Self-pay imaging should not leave you with results but no professional responsible for follow-up.
