How to find a specialist for rectal and anal problems in England

A UK search for proctology often leads to a colorectal surgeon or colorectal clinic. Some bowel symptoms belong in gastroenterology. Start with your GP and describe pain, bleeding, bowel changes, duration and products already tried.
Do not automatically attribute blood to haemorrhoids, even with a previous diagnosis. The NHS explains rectal bleeding and its assessment ↗.
When not to wait
Continuous or heavy bleeding, red toilet water or large clots require A&E or 999. Black or dark-red stool and bloody diarrhoea need urgent GP assessment or 111.
Mention severe pain, deterioration and other concerning changes when seeking help. Buying suppositories should not delay investigation of the cause.
Examination and referral
A GP may offer examination, stool testing or specialist referral ↗. Before an intimate examination, ask what will happen, request a chaperone and discuss consent.
Check a private doctor through the GMC ↗, including the appropriate surgical or other specialty. Ask about experience with your concern. For insurance, approve the appointment and potential investigations; a commercial clinic name does not establish its medical specialism.
Preparation and price
Bring medicines, especially those affecting clotting, previous reports and operation history. Do not stop anticoagulants independently. Do not use an enema or other preparation without clinic instructions: requirements differ by appointment.
Separate assessment, anoscopy or other procedures, investigations, pain relief and results discussion in the quote. Obtain a diagnosis or working explanation, treatment and review plan. If surgery is proposed, ask about alternatives, recovery and complication care. Keep the report for your GP and clarify who communicates biopsy results if a sample is taken.
